Every year on January 9, India celebrates “Non-Resident Indian Day (NRI Day)” or “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas” to recognize the valuable contributions of Indians living abroad to India’s growth. This day holds special significance as it marks Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa in 1915, where he played a crucial role in India’s fight for freedom. NRI Day provides a perfect opportunity for the government to connect with Indians living all around the world. It serves as a global platform for communication, fostering a sense of unity among the diaspora. Since 2003, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conventions have been an annual affair. The highlight of this celebration is the PBD convention, where themes like “Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat” have been explored in recent years. On this day, the government presents the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to non-resident Indians, individuals of Indian descent, or organizations founded and operated by them. This award recognizes those who have made significant contributions globally, supporting India’s causes and engaging in philanthropy.
